Glass vs plastic food storage is less about a single “toxic / non-toxic” label and more about vessel chemistry, lids, heat, and wear.
Glass vessels
Glass is inert for ordinary fridge, freezer, and many oven/microwave uses. It does not rely on plasticizers in the vessel wall. Many glass meal-prep sets still ship with plastic lids — so a “glass set” is not automatically a plastic-free food path.
Plastic, heat, and particles
A 2025 systematic evidence map in npj Science of Food concludes that under intended or foreseeable use, plastic food-contact articles can release micro- and nanoplastics into foodstuffs, while noting that contribution to human exposure and health impacts need more research; a precautionary approach to limiting exposure is described as prudent. An EFSA-supporting literature review (2025) likewise finds evidence of microplastic release during FCM use but stresses methodological shortcomings and that exposure cannot yet be reliably estimated from the literature base.

FDA on BPA
FDA’s consumer Q&A states that available information continues to support the safety of BPA for currently approved uses in food containers and packaging, while noting very small amounts may migrate. Preferring glass vessels is a materials preference, not a claim that FDA has banned BPA food-contact uses.
How we score storage
We score vessel plus lid. Glass bodies with plastic lids land at Partial in our first batch. See the food storage guide.
FAQ
Does FDA say BPA in food packaging is unsafe at current uses?
FDA's consumer Q&A states that available information continues to support the safety of BPA for currently approved uses in food containers and packaging, while noting very small amounts may migrate. Separately, many shoppers still prefer glass vessels to avoid plastic food-contact surfaces.
Why do glass storage sets score Partial here?
We score vessel plus lid. Glass bodies avoid plastic boxes, but almost every mainstream retail lid is still plastic, so those sets land at Partial under our plastic-free food-path rule.
